Liberalism: Why think when you can “feel”?

Mayo Clinic in AZ no longer accepting Medicare patients

Huh.  Who’d have thunk it?  Excerpt:

The Mayo Clinic, praised by President Barack Obama as a national model for efficient health care (how’s that for irony, huh? – Ed.), will stop accepting Medicare patients as of tomorrow at one of its primary-care clinics in Arizona, saying the U.S. government pays too little.

More than 3,000 patients eligible for Medicare, the government’s largest health-insurance program, will be forced to pay cash if they want to continue seeing their doctors at a Mayo family clinic in Glendale, northwest of Phoenix, said Michael Yardley, a Mayo spokesman. The decision, which Yardley called a two-year pilot project, won’t affect other Mayo facilities in Arizona, Florida and Minnesota.

Obama in June cited the nonprofit Rochester, Minnesota-based Mayo Clinic and the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio for offering “the highest quality care at costs well below the national norm.” Mayo’s move to drop Medicare patients may be copied by family doctors, some of whom have stopped accepting new patients from the program, said Lori Heim, president of the American Academy of Family Physicians, in a telephone interview yesterday.

“Many physicians have said, ‘I simply cannot afford to keep taking care of Medicare patients,’” said Heim, a family doctor who practices in Laurinburg, North Carolina. “If you truly know your business costs and you are losing money, it doesn’t make sense to do more of it.”

It only makes more sense if you’re a Democrat.

Hey, I’ve got a super awesome idea: How’s about we expand Medicare and let more people sign up for it?  I mean, in addition to speeding up Medicare’s insolvency, we can also speed up the rate at which doctors don’t accept new patients!

And we’re supposed to believe that the dems new Obamacare is going to be funded by $500 billion from Medicare fraud savings?

  2. tnjack,
I was thinking the same thing. If there was 500 billion in savings there in Medicare to be had, why hasn’t the government gone out in the past to get it. Heck Medicare has only been around for about 40 years. How much overspending has been going on if there is 500 billion in savings now. Of course the 500 billion is really not there. It’s the government going back on contracts with doctors who accept Medicare and saying, “Hey, you know the $0.75 on the dollar we contacted to pay you, we’re only going to pay you $0.50 or less.” And doctors can’t do anything about it accept drop Medicare. Our Founding Fathers are rolling over in their graves at what we’re doing to their divinely inspired creation. They fought against tyranny, yet they had no idea of the tyranny their own posterity, for whom they fought for, would place upon themselves.

  3. To keep some symmetry, White House Spokesstooge Robert Gibbs should promptly announce that the Mayo Clinic dropping Medicare patients is a sign that the system is working.

  4. The Dems are going to exclude all Republican lawmakers from the final negotiations so they won’t have an opportunity to delay or stop the final passage of the bill. Democracy…Obama style.
