Obama to DOJ: Stop defending Defense of Marriage Act in court

Check this out:

President Obama has decided that the Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional and has asked his Justice Department to stop defending it in court, the administration announced today.

“The President believes that DOMA is unconstitutional. They are no longer going to be defending the cases in the 1st and 2nd circuits,” a person briefed on the decision said.

This is what disturbs me greatly about this situation…

The administration has, for two years, defended DOMA in court as being constitutional.  Now, all of a sudden, B.O. has belatedly come to the conclusion that it is not constitutional.  Regardless of which side of the issue you fall on, isn’t there something unsettling about the government taking a position of defense, and then unprompted by any court orders or subsequent legislation, the government comes to a total about-face and says “OK, we’ve been saying all along that it’s constitutional, but now, we’re going to say it’s not…we’ve been wrong all along”?

Exit question: Dare we to hope the administration will pull the same about-face on the constitutionality (or lack thereof) of ObamaCare?  😆

  1. I hope and pray we can run this clown out of office in 2012. I don’t think our Republic will survive a second term.

  2. When he stood on the steps of the U. S. Capital with his right hand raised and his left on some book (I’m sure it was not a Bible) and swore to support and defend the Constitution, did it mean only the parts he agreed with?? Until the law is amended or changed, I don’t think he has that prerogative.

  3. Dux, it doesn’t matter about law with this man, just see how he responded to the court’s order that a moratorium on off-shore drilling must stop.
This man has made it beyond even a remote doubt that his prerogatives are in now way bound by rule of law…just rule of HIM.
Kanaka..I’m not convinced that the republic will survive ONE term with this guy. Considering his overt demonstration of disregard for all the governing laws of this republic, I see no reason why he wouldn’t simply declare the next elections closed…after all, it IS his branch, the executive, that is charged with enforcing the judicial branch’s orders..and if he simply refuses, who exactly steps in and enforces the enforcer?

  4. KG you may be right and so is Kevin. After all, Nobama is only a president and Not a King, but I’m not sure his staff has told him that yet!
He’s disregarded 2 federal judges’ rulings on constitutionality so maybe it’s time to consider ….impeachment?
Can’t you just hear the MSM screaming racism then?
